A Gas Fireplace May Be Your Best Choice

Posted on

If you are restoring a classic house, there are a lot of things that you may want to do to restore it to its original glory. There are a number of things that you can do, including restoring its fireplace, if it has one. If you are going to restore a fireplace, there are different choices. You can restore the fireplace as it would have originally appeared, or you can do something like put in a gas fireplace, which will give you the same look of the fireplace without the same kind of problems as the more traditional fireplace would have.

Gas Fireplaces

A gas fireplace, instead of using wood to create the flame, depends on some kind of gas, whether it's natural gas or propane. The gas is piped into the fireplace and the pipe has small jets which, when turned out, put out a small amount of gas so the fire can happen. It's similar to how a gas stove is set up. Inside the fireplace itself, fake logs can be placed in the fireplace so that it looks like the logs are burning instead of a random pipe that runs through the fireplace. There are a lot of benefits to going with a gas fireplace versus a traditional wood fireplace.

For one thing, dealing with a gas fireplace is cleaner than dealing with a wood fireplace. You aren't dealing with ash, soot, or smoke. None of that is getting out into your air, none of it is getting out on your floors or walls to be cleaned out, and you don't have to make sure that you have cleaned out the fireplace before you use it again. Plus, you aren't having creosote deposited into your chimney, which could cause fires.

Another reason that you might want to go with a gas fireplace is that they tend to be safer. For example, if you have a wood fireplace, one of the things you have to worry about is making sure that the fire is well and truly extinguished. That can include doing things like adding water to the coals and stirring them up as well as spreading them out so that they aren't reigniting each other. If there is even a small glowing coal left, your fire has a chance of reigniting. However, with a gas fireplace, when you are done with the fire, all you have to do is cut the gas supply, and as soon as there is no more supply, there is no more fire. This is much easier and much safer.
